Glossary

Learning Objects, LOs

The IEEE Standard for Learning Object Metadata defines a Learning Object in the following way: "...a learning object is defined as any entity--digital or non- digital-- that may be used for learning, education or training."

Rights Expression Language, REL

A language for specifying rights to content, fees or other consideration required to secure those rights, types of users qualified to obtain those rights, and other associated information necessary to enable e-commerce transactions in content rights.

DOI, Digital Object Identifier

A standard for names assigned to content objects for use on digital networks. Several million of those names (DOIs) have been assigned by DOI Registration Agencies.

DRM - Digital Rights Management

Digital Rights Management is the management of rights by digital means, specifically; intellectual property rights applied to digital content and services.

IP, Intellectual Property

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce.

Intellectual property is divided into two categories: Industrial property, which includes inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs, and geographic indications of source; and Copyright, which includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems and plays, films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs. Rights related to copyright include those of performing artists in their performances, producers of phonograms in their recordings, and those of broadcasters in their radio and television programs.

PPP, Public Private Partnership

Public Private Partnership is a institutionalised form of cooperation between public and private partners, in which both sides bring in resources in order to accomplish complementary goals.
